On A Career in Real Estate:

With a fast paced market many mistake market for genius. There are many agents in the business who should not be and many more on their way in who would do better in another career. Unfortunately the real estate industry is relatively easy to get into with relatively low standards. Most do not make a living wage, yet our numbers grow.

From my last paragraph you might think I'm down on real estate or real estate agents...quite to the contrary. There is not a better business to get into, provided you enter it with a business mentality.

The Pros:
1) Your hours are flexible.
2) You have the opportunity to choose who you work with both in terms of company and customers.
3) It is relatively in-expensive to start your new business.
4) You have the opportunity to help buyers and sellers in a very personal, memorable way.
5) It is relatively easy to work your way to the "top" and consistent basic business practices will get you there.
6) You are in business for yourself.
7) You have the opportunity to earn a nice living.

The Drawbacks:
1) Your hours are flexible. (Many can not handle a self directed schedule)
2) Though you have the choice what customers you work with you must go out and find them; they do not come to you. Real estate is not a retail operation.
3) It is inexpensive to start your business; this is why there are so many people in it.
4) 10% of the agents make 90% of the money, which is not bad if you have learned to be one of the 10%
5) Because the market is perceived to be so good there are a lot of agents getting into the business and there are a lot of new business models that do not necessarily work in the best interests of buyers and sellers

If you are considering a career in real estate, see the career button to the left, pick up a couple of the books that I've recommended and give me a call. I enjoy spending time with people who are considering a career in the real estate profession. It is better to spend the time up front, talk it through, then step back with all of the information and decide whether this is the career for you.
